Weight loss and Chia seeds can go hand in hand. Chia is a low-fat food that’s packed full of important nutrients and is a very effective all natural weight loss tool. But if you’re like me, the first time you heard about someone eating Chia seeds you thought “wait, like the chia pet?”. Yeah, like the chia pet.
I heard about Chia seeds a few years ago during a visit with my father in-law who’s a big time runner. He read about Chia in the book “Born to Run” which chronicles the Tarahumara tribe of Indians who routinely run 50 to 100 miles at a time with Chia seeds being their main form of sustenance along the way.
I thought it was a pretty cool story but wasn’t sure I believed it. Well, I did some research when I got home and it turns out he was telling the truth! Chia seeds are a bona fide super food.
1 tablespoon (10 grams) has:
- 21% of your daily recommended fiber

- 9% of your daily recommended calcium
- 7% of your daily recommended vitamin C
- 7% of your daily recommended Iron
- A full range of vitamin B’s
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Loads of minerals and antioxidants
On top of all that Chia is also a gluten-free food!
Weight Loss and Chia Seeds
But back to weight loss. Eating chia seeds is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to help lose or maintain your weight.
Chia seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water which means they expand in your stomach to make you feel full longer. Mixing a tablespoon or two of Chia seeds into a bowl of oatmeal or yogurt can help you feel full for hours whereas normally you’d be hungry again in 30 minutes.
The soluble fiber in Chia seeds will help move food through your system faster which means fewer fats and toxins are absorbed by your body. Fiber also helps you feel full faster which means you can eat less and still feel full.
Instead of drinking that red bull at 3:00pm reach for a Chia drink instead. Chia seeds have enough low-fat calories to give you the boost you need to get through the afternoon without the unhealthy sugary calories of energy drinks. Just mix a tablespoon or two of chia into a glass of water and let it soak for about 10 minutes until the seeds have softened. It’s also a great way to increase your energy before working out and will help you stay hydrated while at the gym.
There are a number of ways to help reach your weight loss goals with Chia seeds. Check out some of the recipes on the side of the page for ways to incorporate Chia into your diet.
So how much weight can you lose with Chia seeds? Well, that’s really up to you. If you stick to your diet and exercise program Chia can be an excellent way to help reach your goals. The high nutrient low fat seeds has just about everything you need to shed pounds and keep them off.
